HL Deb 18 June 1990 vol 520 cc722-3WA
Lord Henderson of Brompton

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What are the main categories of educational provisions in prisons, and how many prisoners are estimated to have participated in each in the most recent year for which figures are available.

Viscount Ullswater

: The main categories of education for which information is collected centrally are day-time education, vocational training and evening education. The daily average number of prisoners engaged in day-time education and vocational training respectively, in prison service establishments in England and Wales in 1989–90, was 5,643 and 1,342. A similar figure is not available for the number of prisoners participating in evening education.
