HC Deb 14 June 1990 vol 174 c333W
Mr. Ron Davies

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food on how many occasions Colorado beetle has been found in the United Kingdom in the last 12 months; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Maclean

Thirty seven live and nine dead Colorado beetles were found on produce imported into the United Kingdom in the 12-month period ending 31 May 1990. No breeding colonies have been identified here.

The Colorado beetle presents a serious threat to our potato crops and the Government remain determined to prevent its introduction and spread in the United Kingdom. We maintain careful surveillance of imports and continuing public awareness campaigns to ensure that our crops remain free from this pest.
