To ask the Secretary of State for Health, further to his answer of 31 January,Official Report, column 231, what progress has been made by the research project reviewing the possible connections between BSE and Creutzfeld-Jakob disease; and what information he has on the common properties of the two diseases.

After detailed planning the Department of Health has recently commissioned the neuropathology component of the study which my hon. Friend the then Parliamentary Under Secretary of State announced in a reply to the hon. Member for Don Valley (Mr. Redmond) on 31 January at column231. The two diseases Creutzfeld-Jakob Disease, a spongiform encephalopathy in humans, and bovine spongiform encephalopathy are both fatal, progressive, neurological disorders and have a large number of common properties.
