Mr. Andrew Mitchell

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs whether he will make a statement on the elections in the Czech and Slovak Federal Republic on 8 June.

Mr. Waldegrave

We warmly welcome these free and peaceful elections. The exceptionally high turnout shows the enthusiasm with which the Czechoslovak people have greeted the restoration of democracy in their country. Our relations with Czechoslovakia are excellent.

We look forward to the formation of a new Government. They can rely on our help and support in meeting the challenges ahead.
