HL Deb 11 June 1990 vol 520 c144WA
Lord Rea

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they intend to send an official representative to the conference on AIDS to be held in San Francisco in June.

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Department of Health (Baroness Hooper)

The Sixth International Conference on AIDS in San Francisco later this month is a non-governmental conference. The Government consider that the restrictions which are placed on the entry of people who are HIV positive into the United States of America do not accord with the advice of World Health Organisation experts that HIV-related entry restrictions on travellers are ineffective in controlling the spread of HIV infections. European Community Health Ministers have decided that it would be inappropriate for them to attend. Her Majesty's Government has concluded that it would also be inappropriate for any departmental officials to attend the conference.
