HC Deb 08 June 1990 vol 173 cc737-8W
Mr. Harry Barnes

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what commitment has been made by the Government of Gibraltar in support of the Nicosia charter to protect the environment of the Mediterranean basin.

Mr. Waldegrave

[holding answer 21 May 1990]: The principal aim of the Nicosia charter was to reiterate the commitment of the parties to the convention for the protection of the Mediterranean sea against pollution (the Barcelona convention). The United Kingdom and Gibraltar are not parties to this convention, although Gibraltar does comply with relevant provisions of it. We naturally welcome measures which will lead to an improvement in the Mediterranean environment.
