To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what information he has on the numbers of people who applied for higher education, by higher educational establishment, for each of the last five years.

1Candidates applying for admission to UK universities (excluding the Open University and the University of Buckingham) through UCCA for full-time undergraduate first degree or first diploma courses.

2The PCAS admissions scheme started with entry for 1986 and covered 30 polytechnics in England and Wales offering full-time and sandwich first degree and Dip. HE courses.

3 For 1988 entry, institutional coverage extended to include eight of the larger colleges of higher education in England.

4 For 1989 entry, the scheme was extended to cover entry to full-time HND courses.
