39. Mr. Beith

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the average inflation rate of countries in the exchange rate mechanism of the European monetary system.

Mr. Ryder

The average inflation rate of members of the exchange rate mechanism of the EMS was 4.3 per cent. in March 1990.

40. Mr. Menzies Campbell

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer when he expects the Madrid conditions concerning United Kingdom entry into the exchange rate mechanism of the European monetary system to be met; and if he will make a statement.
