HC Deb 07 June 1990 vol 173 c701W
Mr. Stevens

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what representations he has received on his proposals to encourage charitable giving.

Mr. Lilley

The Budget proposals to encourage charitable giving have been widely welcomed by the charity world.

52. Mr. Thurnham

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what has been the effect of the Treasury's incentives upon the level of charitable donations; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Lilley

Since 1979 we have improved and extended the range of tax reliefs for charitable giving. These have helped charitable giving to increase substantially in real terms. For example, the Charities Aid Foundation's estimates show that donations to the top 200 fund-raising charities have doubled in real terms since 1978–79.
