§ The Prime MinisterOn 1 October 1989, the latest date for which figures are available, there were 565,075 whole-time civil servants. On 20 March this year the Department of Social Security opened a workplace nursery in Hertford which offers 12 whole-time places. Six more nurseries are expected to open later this year.
