HC Deb 05 June 1990 vol 173 c419W
Mr. Caborn

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department under what circumstances holders of South African passports are eligible to vote in the United Kingdom.

Mr. Peter Lloyd

Holders of South African passports resident in the United Kingdom who are not otherwise disqualified can register as electors and vote at parliamentary, European parliamentary and local government elections only if they also hold British citizenship, the citizenship of another Commonwealth country or of the Republic of Ireland. Holders of South African passports living outside the United Kingdom can register as overseas electors and vote at parliamentary and European parliamentary elections here only if they are British citizens, and fulfil the other criteria for registration.
