HL Deb 05 June 1990 vol 519 c1360WA
Lord Windlesham

asked Her Majesty's Government:

From what date it would be practicable to divert financial resources from the prison building programme in England and Wales to the separate provision of secure facilities for the detention of persons charged with criminal offences who have been remanded in custody pending trial.

Earl Ferrers

The prison building programme includes provision for the construction of a remand centre at Everthorpe. The rest of the programme provides for the construction of local and training prisons, and there are no plans to divert funds away from these so as to provide more remand centres. We hope to make a further announcement soon on the possibility of involving the private sector in the remand system.
