To ask the Secretary of State for Wales how many persons were directly employed as staff in the National Health Service for the whole of Wales in(a) 1979, (b) 1984, (c) 1987 and (d) the latest available date.

The whole-time equivalents of staff directly employed by the NHS in Wales, including the Welsh Health Common Services Authority, is given in the table:
