§ Mr. Peter GriffithsTo ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what has been the real increase in the average earnings of(a) polytechnic lecturers and (b) university lecturers over the period April 1980 to April 1990; and what were the cash figures in each case.
Mr. JacksonThe real increase in the average earnings of(a) polytechnic lecturers and (b) university lecturers over the period 1 April 1980 to 1 April 1990 is set out in the table. The choice of dates colours the picture: if the period to 1 May 1990 is considered the university lecturers' real-terms increase is 8.7 per cent.
