1Separately identified figures for heads and deputy heads were collected for the first time in 1988 possibly resulting in undercounting in previous years. But to the extent that they were recorded prior to 1988 they will have been allocated to a teaching subject, slightly inflating the number of vacancies in individual subjects relative to their 1988 values.
2Percentage vacancy estimates are based on 1988 figures. 1988 subject teacher numbers have been derived by applying 1989 Secondary School Staffing Survey rates on subject teacher numbers to the teacher numbers recorded at January 1988.
3Vacancy rates are recorded on the Form 618G and vacancies for Welsh teachers are combined with vacancies in other languages.
