To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what is the incidence of caseous lymphadenitis; and how many cases have been reported in the last six months in(a) goats and (b) humans.

Prior to 1990 caseous lymphadenitis had not been recorded in animals in the United Kingdom for many years. It has, however, been confirmed in three goat herds in England in the last six months all linked by the movement of stock to the same import consignment. There have been no reported cases of human infection in the United Kingdom in the same period.

The disease is found in a number of European countries and elsewhere in goats and sheep, but there are no accurate
