Mr. Madden

To ask the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what was the level of production in the textiles and clothing industries in the most recent three months for which figures are available, and for the same three months one year previously.

[holding answer 24 July 1990]: The latest available figure, in terms of United Kingdom manufacturers' sales by value, is £3,334 million in the second quarter of 1989, compared with £3,171 million in the same period of 1988.

To ask the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what recent contacts he has had with the textiles and clothing industries.

[holding answer 24 July 1990]: My right hon. Friend's predecessor met representatives of the textiles and clothing industries on 12 June and my right hon. and noble Friend Lord Trefgarne then Minister for Trade visited Edinburgh on 29 June to meet hon. Members and representatives of the Scottish knitwear and woollen industry. He also visited textile and clothing businesses in Yorkshire on 27 April and Lancashire on 4 May. Progress in the Uruguay round of the GATT multilateral trade negotiations was discussed on all these occasions.
