§ Mr. Nicholas BrownTo ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the latest estimate of the amount of revenue brought in by each tax inspector in a year; and what is their average salary.
§ Mr. Ryder[holding answer 23 July 1990]: The receipts for inspectors of taxes cannot be separately identified. Taking all Inland Revenue employees, excluding valuation office staff not employed on taxes work, the tax receipts per employee for the year 1988–89—the most recent year for which figures are available—amounted to £1.12 million per head, with an additional £474,000 per head in national insurance contributions collected. For that year, the average salary of Inland Revenue staff was about £10,500.
