HC Deb 26 July 1990 vol 177 cc571-2W
Mr. Andrew MacKay

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if he will make a statement on his recent discussions with political parties in the Province.

Mr. Brooke

[pursuant to his reply, 19 July 1990, c. 1157–58]: Despite a further intensive round of exchanges, it has not yet proved possible to secure final agreement on the basis for holding political talks.

After the holiday period, when all the main potential participants should again be available, I intend to resume my efforts to resolve the outstanding issues. For that purpose I plan to hold further meetings with the political parties and with representatives of the Irish Government in September.
