To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what information he has on the level of Japanese military expenditure over the last five years and on the likely trend in expenditure; and if he will make a statement.

According to recent editions of the International Institute for Strategic Studies' publication "The Military Balance", Japanese defence expenditure over the last five years was:

1987–88	3.5
1988–89	3.7
1989–90	3.9

Plans for Japanese defence expenditure are a matter for the Government of Japan.
