To ask the Secretary of State for Health if he will make it his policy to take into account the deliberations of the committee set up in 1989 relating to services for the under-fives, in relationship to quality in preparing guidelines for part III of the Children Act 1989.

Yes. The conclusions of the report of the Department of Education and Science, "Committee of Inquiry into the Quality of Educational Experience of Under Fives", will be taken into account in the Children Act guidelines on day care services for pre-school children.

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what consultations his Department has held in relationship to quality in the guidance relating to part III of the Children Act 1989.

Guidance under part III of the Children Act 1989 will be the subject of a wide-ranging consultation exercise. This process has commenced and comments will be welcome on any aspects of the draft guidance within the next three months.
