To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what recent communications he has received from the Commission in Brussels about the quality of the United Kingdom's drinking water and beaches.

The European Commission has commenced court proceedings against this country and virtually all other member states on the bathing water and drinking water directive. I had useful discussions yesterday with the Commission about our very substantial investment programme to improve the quality of our drinking water and bathing waters.
