Mr. Marlow

To ask the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what support Her Majesty's Government are providing to the United Kingdom leather industry to enable it to meet the advancing technological requirements of the sector.

Mr. Douglas Hogg

I am pleased to announce that my Department is to provide assistance to a research programme of five projects on improvements to the control of leather production and the quality of leather. The DTI contribution will be £1,642,694 towards total costs of £4,199,271.

The work sponsored by DTI will be carried out on behalf of the industry by the British Leather Confederation in Northampton over the next five years.
