To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what progress is being made with his Department's initiative to provide direct access to subsidised accommodation for single homeless people sleeping rough on the streets of London and other cities.

Urgent consultations are currently taking place with voluntary groups, local authorities and housing associations about the provision of direct access accommodation in London. Consideration will be given in due course to the possibility of extending the initiative to other major cities.
