HC Deb 25 July 1990 vol 177 cc363-4W
Ms. Walley

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what progress Her Majesty's inspectorate of pollution has made in securing the co-operation of Ferro Alloys in Glossop in meeting the reduced target rate of 113 kg/hour by 31 August 1992; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Trippier

No intermediate target has been set for the company. The inspectorate will continue to monitor the situation and as yet is unaware of any reasons why the target will not be met.

Ms. Walley

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what is the current hourly rate of sulphur dioxide emissions from the Ferro Alloys chimney stack in Glossop for the last six months, measured in metric terms.

Mr. Trippier

The estimated hourly rates of sulphur dioxide emissions from the Ferro Alloys chimney for the last six months are given in the table:

Month Kg/hr sulphur dioxide
1990
January 325
February 358
March 320
April 325
May 313
June 296

Average figures are based on monthly production figures and monthly sulphur dioxide results.

Ms. Walley

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will inform the Peak Park planning board of the current level of sulphur dioxide emissions from the Ferro Alloys chimney stack in Glossop: and if he will monitor the effect of sulphur dioxide emissions from that stack on the area covered by the Peak Park planning board.

Mr. Trippier

Information is available and the inspectorate will contact the Peak Park planning board to ensure that this information is made available to it on a regular basis.

HMIP does not normally carry out environmental monitoring. This is usually done by the relevant local authorities, in this case both High Peak borough council and Derbyshire Dales district council, both of which cover the Peak Park near to Glossop.

At any distance from the Glossop plant it is unlikely that any emissions from Ferro Alloys could be distinguished from other sources.
