HC Deb 25 July 1990 vol 177 c288W
Mr. Kirkwood

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what grant mechanisms exist for students who wish to attend further education colleges in the European Community after 1992.

Mr. Eggar

Mandatory awards are available to eligible students from England and Wales attending first degree and designated comparable courses provided by United Kingdom institutions which include a period of study abroad. Loans are to be available on the same basis. Certain postgraduate awards are tenable at institutions abroad, including the College of Europe and the European University Institute. Local education authorities may make discretionary awards to students following other further and higher education courses abroad.

European Community programmes—ERASMUS, LINGUA, COMMETT—also assist United Kingdom students who wish to follow part of their higher education courses in other member states.

In accordance with the treaty of Rome, United Kingdom students taking up places in further and higher education institutions in other member states can have their tuition costs met in full or in part by the relevant authorities, on the same basis as nationals of the state concerned.
