To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what proposals there are to end the dumping of sewage and sewage sludge in the Bristol channel.

Mr. Heathcoat-Amory

The Government are committed to ending dumping of sewage sludge at sea by 1998 and to the introduction of treatment for all substantial discharges of sewage. Discussions are now being held with the water industry and relevant regulatory bodies about the implementation of these policies.
