HC Deb 25 July 1990 vol 177 c314W
114. Mr. Wray

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland whether Her Majesty's Government are considering suggestions by scientists that adequate and extensive afforestation schemes in Britain and Europe could play an important part in the efforts to solve the problems of air pollution and global warming.

Lord James Douglas-Hamilton

The Government are fully aware that growing trees absorb significant quantities of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, thus helping to counter the problem of global warming. We provide substantial grants to encourage afforestation in the United Kingdom, and we supported the forestry action programme initiative launched by the European Community just over a year ago.
