§ Lord James Douglas-HamiltonThe Government are fully aware that growing trees absorb significant quantities of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, thus helping to counter the problem of global warming. We provide substantial grants to encourage afforestation in the United Kingdom, and we supported the forestry action programme initiative launched by the European Community just over a year ago.
