§ Mr. WallerTo ask the Secretary of State for Transport what information he has about the number of vehicles in use that have been constructed from two or more written-off vehicles.
§ Mr. AtkinsThis information is not available. Many vehicles written off by insurance companies are capable of satisfactory repair, including the use of parts from other accident-damaged vehicles. If rebuilding work is not carried out properly, there are offences of using, offering for sale and selling an unroadworthy vehicle. A prospective purchaser is well advised to have a second-hand vehicle inspected by an independent expert before buying it.
