Ms. Armstrong

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security what are the latest figures for the numbers of children aged 16 to 18 years claimed for as dependants by parents(a) on income support and (b) on family credit.

Mrs. Gillian Shephard

[holding answer 16 July 1990]: The latest available information is that, at May 1989, the number of dependants aged 16 to 18 years for whom income support was in payment was 109,000. In the families receiving family credit at the end of April 1990 there were 37,000 dependants who were aged 16, 17 and 18 at the time the awards were made.
