HC Deb 19 July 1990 vol 176 c721W
37. Mr. David Davis

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if he has any plans to meet representatives of the Community Relations Council to discuss improved links between Catholic and Protestant communities.

Dr. Mawhinney

The Northern Ireland Community Relations Council was established in January 1990. The council has already established a wide range of contacts with groups working to promote reconciliation, greater cross-community contact and awareness and understanding of cultural diversity in Northern Ireland. The council has also launched a number of funding programmes designed to support the work of these groups. I have not yet had the opportunity to meet the council, but I hope to do so later in the year.

39. Mrs. Maureen Hicks

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland how many schools are taking part in the cross-community contact scheme.

Dr. Mawhinney

Since the introduction of the cross-community contact scheme in October 1987, more than 400 schools—about one third of all schools in Northern Ireland—have become involved.
