§ Mr. MellorThe table gives, for each prison service establishment, the number of inmates who died by their own hand in 1989 and, of these cases, the number in which verdicts of suicide were returned at coroners' inquests.
Before 1 January 1990 no central record was kept of the causes of deaths of prison officers. That information is therefore not readily available and could not be obtained except at disproportionate cost.
