To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what is his policy in respect of the Scottish hardwood charter—Trees for 2000.

We support the Scottish hardwood charter in principle. I have written to the promoter of the charter giving support on the basis of our commitment to the concept of sustainable use of natural resources, but cautioning against the replacement of natural rain forests with plantations.
