HC Deb 12 July 1990 vol 176 c336W
Dr. Godman

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence which Scottish regiments have been disbanded or amalgamated with others in the past 25 years; if he has any proposals to disband or amalgamate any existing Scottish regiments; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Archie Hamilton

Two regular Scottish cavalry and infantry regiments have been disbanded or amalgamated since 1965: the last regular battalion of the Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) was disbanded in 1968; and the Royal Scots Greys were amalgamated with the 3rd Carabiniers (Prince of Wales Dragoon Guards)—a Welsh regiment—to form the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards (Carabiniers and Greys) in 1971.

I cannot comment on the future of any particular regiments at this stage. Work on options for change is continuing.
