HC Deb 12 July 1990 vol 176 c299W
Mr. Hood

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland how many inmates in each Scottish prison are HIV positive; and if he will make a statement.

Lord James Douglas-Hamilton

On 31 March 1990, the latest date for which complete records are available, the following number of prisoners were confirmed as being HIV positive.

Number
Aberdeen 1
Barlinnie 2
Cornton Vale 1
Dungavel 2
Edinburgh 21
Friarton 1
Glenochil 3
Greenock 0
Low Moss 0
Noranside 0
Penninghame 0
Perth 14
Peterhead 1
Shotts 4

In addition, three young offenders on that date were confirmed as being HIV positive.

The grand total of 53 for 31 March 1990 compares with figures of 61 for 30 June 1989, 64 for 30 September 1989 and 40 for 31 December 1989. Before then figures were not regularly collected.

The number of prisoners in Scottish prisons at any one time who are confirmed as being HIV positive naturally fluctuates, but normally it is between about 40 and 70. This trend has not altered over the past three years.
