Mr. Dunnachie

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland how many state registered nurses are currently in their final year of study in national health service hospitals in Scotland; what percentage of that figure is expected to obtain immediate full-time employment within Scottish national health service hospitals on completion of their training; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Michael Forsyth

As at 31 March 1990—the latest date for which figures are available—2,838 student nurses in Scotland were in their final year of study for first-level registration. Information on how many of them might be expected to obtain immediate full-time employment within the national health service is not held centrally.

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what percentage of state registered nurses(a) qualified in Scotland and (b) obtained full-time employment within national health service hospitals in Scotland during 1987–88 and 1988–89; and if he will make a statement.
