HC Deb 09 July 1990 vol 176 c93W
67. Mr. Knapman

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport how many miles of railway line have now been electrified; and what estimate he has as to the amount of electrification due to take place over the next five years.

Mr. Freeman

At 31 March 1990, BR had 2,830 route miles electrified. BR's 1989 plan proposed electrification of a further 560 route miles by 1993–94, three quarters of which have already been authorised. Major electrification projects are expected to include Cambridge to King's Lynn, the Birmingham cross-city link and the final stages of the east coast main line electrification.
