§ 67. Mr. KnapmanTo ask the Secretary of State for Transport how many miles of railway line have now been electrified; and what estimate he has as to the amount of electrification due to take place over the next five years.
§ Mr. FreemanAt 31 March 1990, BR had 2,830 route miles electrified. BR's 1989 plan proposed electrification of a further 560 route miles by 1993–94, three quarters of which have already been authorised. Major electrification projects are expected to include Cambridge to King's Lynn, the Birmingham cross-city link and the final stages of the east coast main line electrification.
