Mr. Nicholas Bennett

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what has been the increase in police pay and manpower since 1979.

Since this Government came to office, the pay of police constables has increased by just over 41 per cent. in real terms. Police manpower has increased by 15,284 to 126,777, an increase of just under 14 per cent.

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will give details of the money and real terms pay increases of a police constable, sergeant, inspector and chief inspector in each year since 1974.
