To ask the Secretary of State for Health whether he intends to issue fresh guidelines(a) to general practitioners in respect of over-prescribing and (b) to family practitioner committees in respect of the operation of regulation 16 of the Service Committee and Tribunal Regulations.

The recently published working paper, "Improving Prescribing", (a copy of which is available in the Library), describes a range of new initiatives to improve the quality of general practitioner prescribing. It is the Government's intention, as set out in paragraph 10.2 of that working paper, to amend regulation 16 of the Service Committee and Tribunal Regulations.
