102. Mr. Win Griffiths

103. Mr. Worthington

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a statement on the famine situation in Ethiopia.

Mrs. Chalker

The situation remains essentially as stated in my replies of 18 June at column394 to the hon. Members for Workington (Mr. Campbell-Savours) and Stockton, North (Mr. Cook), respectively. We have since been pleased to hear that both the Government and rebel sides have agreed to an early visit by United Nations personnel to assess the extent of damage to the port of Massawa and the prospects for reopening it to relief shipments. We await the outcome of the visit with great interest.
