§ Mr. Michael
To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will give the number of persons recruited to the administrative level of the Foreign Office(a) in the past year, (b) on average each year during the past decade and (c) on average each year during the previous decade; and how many he intends should be recruited in the coming year.

§ Mr. Sainsbury
We have recruited the following number of persons into the administrative level of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office:

(b) On average each year during the past decade 20.5

(c) on average during the previous decade 19

Our recruitment target for 1990 is 30.
