To ask the Secretary of State for Health what has been the percentage change in the number of hospital doctors in the national health service since 1979.

The number of hospital doctors in the national health service in England has risen from 39,859 at 30 September 1979 to 45,574 at 30 September 1988, an increase of 14 per cent.

These figures include permanent paid and honorary staff.
