To ask the Secretary of State for Health if he will make a statement about staffing levels in hospitals in Greater Manchester and care of the elderly.

Staffing levels in hospitals and, in particular, the care of elderly people in Greater Manchester is a matter for the local health authorities, taking account of all the guidance and good practice available.

The North Western regional health authority has, in particular, issued guidance in a document entitled "Standards for Nursing Services", a copy of which is available in the Library.
