To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what investment there has been in Ravenscraig steel plant in each of the past five years.

Significant investment approved for Ravenscraig plant prior to privatisation of the British Steel Corporation was as follows:

  • 1985—nil
  • 1986—£17 million
  • 1987—nil
  • 1988—nil

Since privatisation, investment decisions have been a matter for British Steel.
