Dr. Hampson

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many postgraduate degrees, and in what subjects, were awarded in the last year for which figures are available; and what were the comparable numbers in 1979.

Information is given in the table. A new classification was introduced in 1985–86 for the recording of university students' subject of study. For broad comparison purposes additional information has been given for the last year of the previous subject classification (1984) and the first year of the new classification (1985).
