asked Her Majesty's Government:

How long it takes for a bill of costs for taxation to be dealt with at Maidstone County Court.

The average interval between the lodging of a bill for taxation in Maidstone County Court and the notification of the completion of the taxation is six weeks.

What is the scale of delays in dealing with correspondence now occurring at Portsmouth Combined Court; and what action the Lord Chancellor proposes to take to deal with the situation.

The Lord Chancellor

On average correspondence at Portsmouth Combined Court Centre is dealt with within seven weeks of receipt. All correspondence is opened on the day of receipt and urgent matters identified. Four additional clerical posts and 700 hours' overtime have been authorised.

How many weeks of unopened mail remained to be dealt with at Bournemouth County Court on 1st January 1990; and what steps the Lord Chancellor proposes to take to deal with delays at the court.

There are no items of unopened correspondence at Bournemouth and on average correspondence is being dealt with within seven weeks of receipt. Two additional clerical posts and 350 hours' overtime have been authorised.
