To ask the Secretary of State for Energy what is the latest estimate of the cost of building the Severn barrage.

Mr. Peter Morrison

The Severn tidal power group, in its report on the latest phase of studies, estimates the cost of building the Severn barrage at £8.5 billion.

The report was published last year in the Energy Paper series and copies placed in the Library of the House.
