To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security by what percentage(a) the basic retirement pension and (b) prices increased between April 1979 and 1990.

The latest available information shows that, between April 1979 and April 1989, the basic retirement pension rose by 123.6 per cent., whilst prices rose by 110.5 per cent. This represents an increase of 6.2 per cent. in the real value of the retirement pension over the period.
