To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what assessment he has made of the effectiveness of parent representation on the boards of governors of schools in the maintained sector.

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science whether the new arrangements for parent governors are working satisfactorily.

Mrs. Rumbold

A survey last year showed that new governing bodies, with a much larger number of parents, are already getting to grips with important educational issues. The most effective governing bodies are those where all members work as a team, in which parents have an important part to play.
