HC Deb 30 January 1990 vol 166 c97W
Mr. Hawkins

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what would be the value today of the ceiling for mortgage interest tax relief if it had been indexed in line with inflation and if it had been indexed in line with average house prices.

Mr. Lilley

The ceiling for mortgage interest relief was set at £30,000 in 1983–84. It would be £41,000 in 1989–90 if it had increased in line with the movement in retail prices, and £64,000 if it had increased in line with the movement in average house prices.
